Study guide for lesson to be given March 2, 2014

What trials do you face right now?

If we were sent to Earth by a Heavenly Father who loves us, why do we have trials in our life?
     Mosiah 23:21-22
     Abraham 3:25
     Ether 12:27

Where do the trials we have come from?

Adversity comes from different sources. You may at times face trials as a consequence of your own pride and dis- obedience. These trials can be avoided through righteous liv- ing. Other trials are simply a natural part of life and may come at times when you are living righteously. For example, you may experience trials in times of sickness or uncertainty or at the deaths of loved ones. Adversity may sometimes come because of others’ poor choices and hurtful words and actions.

How can the Atonement help us during our trials?

Knowing HE understands, and knows how to help us
         Alma 7:11-13
         Isaiah 53:3-5

"The Savior has suffered not just for our iniquities but also for the inequality, the unfairness, the pain, the anguish, and the emotional distresses that so frequently beset us. There is no physical pain, no anguish of soul, no suffering of spirit, no infirmity or weakness that you or I ever experience during our mortal journey that the Savior did not experience first. You and I in a moment of weakness may cry out, “No one understands. No one knows.” No human being, perhaps, knows. But the Son of God perfectly knows and understands, for He felt and bore our burdens before we ever did. And because He paid the ultimate price and bore that burden, He has perfect empathy and can extend to us His arm of mercy in so many phases of our life. He can reach out, touch, succor—literally run to us—and strengthen us to be more than we could ever be and help us to do that which we could never do through relying upon only our own power."

  1. Is the enabling power of the atonement the same as grace or are they different but share some of the same attributes?

  2. That is a very good question..one I'm not sure that I'm absolutely clear of the answer. But from what I've read I think that the enabling power is part of grace. Grace is how we experience the Atonement (the divine help we get from the Atonement) and the Atonement is what Jesus has done to help us to return to our Heavenly Father (suffering our sins and sorrows, making resurrection possible and helping us to get through the trials of this life - it's kind of the umbrella word for all of it) Did that make it clearer or did I just muddy the water. I'm thinking we need to bare bones this topic to make it as clear as we can next lesson. I'm not sure all of this is getting through to everyone.
